CANYON CORRIDOR CONNECTION

LifeBridge Community

Alliance (LCA) is a nonprofit

community development

corporation located on 27

Avenue and Orangewood

Avenue. We focus on

improving lives by partnering with existing resources and community

leaders to help meet needs of the people in our neighborhood by

providing vital community resources such as a food bank, medical

assistance, literacy and educational programs. With access to these

resources, people have the ability to learn the skills necessary to

improve their lives and the community. LCA is an exciting example of

community partnership at work.

Leveraging Partnerships to Build Community

Communi t y Highl ights

The Greater Valley Area Health Education Center (GVAHEC) is one of five

health education centers across Arizona funded primarily through Arizona State

Lottery funds. GVAHEC connects students to health careers, health professionals

to communities and communities to health promotion and prevention activities.

It also focuses its efforts on recruiting and retaining culturally competent health

professionals to meet the growing needs in urban, underserved and rural areas.

We accomplish this mission by providing opportunities in four core areas: health

careers students (junior high and high school students), health profession

students (college students), professional development and community

health education.

The GVAHEC welcomes collaboration with a number of local and state

organizations to develop and deliver continuing education opportunities.

Learn more about GVAHEC by contacting Angelina Alfaro, Health Education

Center Director of Health Services, at

In the Granada neighborhood, an organization called Vecinos Unidos Siempre

(Neighbors United Forever) is gaining momentum for involving community

members, city staff and the police department with one

mission in mind: unite the people to bring change for a

safe, clean and graffiti-free neighborhood.

Vecinos Unidos Siempre (VUS) is educating residents about

graffiti in their alleys and giving community members an

opportunity to help with cleanups each month. VUS is

also working with Cactus Park Precinct officers to help

patrol areas during these cleanups and actively engage

in dialogue with residents about safety to increase the number of

crimes being reported. In addition, Maria Uhing of the Phoenix City Prosecutor’s

Office, also provides support to residents by answering questions and educating

the community.

To learn more about VUS, or how to participate in these cleanups, please

the Calendar of Events on pg. 19 for dates and locations.
