32 | CANYON CORRIDOR CONNECTION 2016

Light Rail Coming to the Canyon Corridor

Canyon Corridor Light Rail Progress

If you have traveled on 19th Ave. between Bethany Home Rd. and

Dunlap Ave. recently, you’ll have noticed that construction for that segment

of the Light Rail extension has been completed and is now operational.

With the recent opening of light rail to downtown Mesa this means you

can travel hands-free in comfort along approximately 26 miles between

Dunlap and 19th Ave. and downtown Mesa and all points between with

access to 100s of restaurants, 1,000s of businesses,

many education institutions, retail stores, service

businesses, entertainment venues, sports venues,

places of employment and much that are too

numerous to list here.

area (see map pg.

)

spanning from Indian School Rd., north to

Peoria Ave. and from 43

rd

Ave. to I-17 on the

current eastern boundary, includes part of the

current planning phase of Light Rail location—

to determine the final routes and

station locations to extend the

current rail route to downtown

Glendale.

Goals, Benefits and Costs

The goal of high capacity

transportation expansion is to spur

development that complements

neighborhoods; e.g. empty lots becoming small businesses that serve our

neighborhoods.

The subsequent positive economic impact of the first 20 miles of Light

Rail has exceeded expectations with $8.2 billion in development along

Light Rail. At a cost $1.4 billion in development and build-out, this is about

an 8 to 1 return on the original 20 mile cost which is about 5 times the

national average.

Albert Santana, Assistant to the Phoenix City Manager expressed

appreciation of the voter support for “Phoenix Transportation 2050”

(Proposition 104):

“That support enables another 42 miles of Light

Rail and Streetcar and adds 75 newmiles of bus

rapid transit in the Phoenix area. The Phoenix

Transportation 2050 program also gives us the

advantage to leverage federal funding for the next

50 years.

“We now know with the passage of Prop 104

that we can provide connections along the route

through the Canyon Corridor (CC) for Alhambra

High School, neighborhoods, businesses and

Grand Canyon University.”
