G.A.I.N. stands for Getting Arizona Involved

in Neighborhoods. G.A.I.N. is Arizona’s answer

to National Night Out (NNO), which is held in

August. Because of the soaring temperatures

in August, communities statewide decided to

observe NNO in October and call it G.A.I.N.

October is also Crime Prevention month. G.A.I.N.

is a day of celebration for the successes of crime

prevention through community involvement.

Maryvale Revitalization Corporation (MRC) hosted the Jacori Rufus Memorial College Scholarship charity golf tournament at Grand Canyon University

(GCU) golf course on December 12, 2015. The tournament, named after a former Maryvale High School graduate, began in 2000 and has had several

home courses over the years. For a number of years it had been held at Maryvale golf course, which was closed for renovations and reopened in 2016 as

Grand Canyon University golf course. GCU was kind enough to allow MRC to have access to the course for their annual charity event. The event raises

money for college scholarships offered to qualified students at Alhambra, Carl Hayden, Maryvale and Trevor Browne high schools. Qualified students

must be varsity athletes and in National Honor Society.

Thanks to the excitement generated by the opportunity to play the brand new course, this year’s event filled quickly! It sported a full complement of 128

golfers along with raffle, silent auction and ball drop. To date, the scholarship fund has helped 34 students go to college and written over $100,000 in

scholarship checks.

MRC wants to thank GCU for allowing its golfers and charity event on their brand new course before it had opened to the public.
