42 | CANYON CORRIDOR CONNECTION 2016

As the weather cools down, there will a lot of

activity in the Canyon Corridor community.

Volunteers will work to clean alleys and

neighborhoods and home owners will

begin spring cleaning. “We anticipate that

neighbors will sit out front and greet each

other, porch lights will shine bright in the

night to make streets safe, and neighborhoods

in the Canyon Corridor Community will

be a place where families live, learn, and

thrive,” said Eva Olivas, Executive Director of

Phoenix Revitalization Corporation (PRC).

Phoenix Revitalization Corporation

recently entered into a 10-year partnership

with Grand Canyon University to facilitate a program which will assist

in the revitalization and beautification of neighborhoods and homes

in the Canyon Corridor community. The program, Canyon Corridor

Revitalization Project, is a community-driven effort to support local

beautification and safety efforts and to develop resident leaders who will

contribute to improved quality of life in the Canyon Corridor community.

“We are very excited to be a part of the revitalization effort in the Canyon

Corridor,” said Olivas. “PRC’s mission is to revitalize neighborhoods and

connect generations and that’s our goal for the Canyon Corridor.”

PRC, a nonprofit community development corporation, is dedicated to the

revitalization of neighborhoods by facilitating community development

projects and resident leadership training that promotes self-esteem and

self-efficacy. PRC was founded in 1986 to address the historic blight and

crime in the neighborhoods of the Central City South community as a

project of Phoenix Memorial Hospital. Today, PRC works throughout

Phoenix and has one statewide program. Ongoing programs include

neighborhood clean-ups, resident leadership development, community

gardens, minor home repair program, community newsletter and more.

The Home Repair Program, Neighborhood Beautification Program and

Resident Leadership Academy are free programs available to homeowners

and residents of the Canyon Corridor community.

Home Repair Program

The Home Repair Program aims to improve a home in the Canyon

Corridor area contributing to safety, efficiency and beautification.

Home owners who live in the home can apply for interior or exterior

home repairs. Repairs may include doors, windows, walls, fencing,

bathroom fixtures and planting of trees. There is no charge to the

homeowner. To qualify, homeowners must meet the 80% income

limits for Maricopa County. The project launched March 1, 2016,

in the Granada Neighborhood with Sevilla, Alhambra, and Cordova

neighborhoods to follow. For home repairs, homeowners can apply on line

at phxrevitalization.org. Click on Home Repair Program under Canyon

Corridor in the upper right hand corner. Homeowners can also request

an application be mailed to their homes by calling PRC at 602-253-6895.

Funding is limited, so submit early for consideration.

Neighborhood Beautification Program

Neighborhood beautification projects will help neighborhoods look

good, feel safer, lift spirits and improve property values. Neighborhood

Associations and Block Watch Groups registered with the City of Phoenix

can submit an application to receive support for a project up to the

amount of $2,000. Applications are currently being accepted to beautify

the Granada Neighborhood. Funding is limited, so submit early for

consideration.

Resident Leadership Development

PRC has many years of experience in resident leadership training. Our

goal is to inspire and encourage residents to become involved in their

community, school, government or an activity of their choice. PRC will

be conducting two leadership trainings per year with the first training to

be offered in spring 2016. Training is free to Canyon Corridor residents

and focuses on self-esteem and self-efficacy

to encourage and support community

engagement and transformation projects.

Scholarships are also available for resident

leaders to attend local and statewide

leadership trainings and conferences at

no charge.
