Q:

What’s going on in your district that will embrace and help

transform the Canyon Corridor this year?

A:

The I-17 area needs work, but it is essential to the

health and future of Phoenix. The North Mountain

Redevelopment is a plan created to revitalize the area

bounded by I-17; 19

th

Avenue and 15

th

Avenue in the east;

Cholla Street and Peoria Avenue in the north; 35

th

Avenue

in the west; and Butler Drive, Alice Avenue and the Arizona

Canal in the south. The plan provides a community-based

approach to achieving revitalization and supports the

continued redevelopment of the area.

I have also worked to move the light rail to

Metrocenter. In summer 2013, Valley Metro initiated

a study as the next stage of planning for Northwest

Phase II, to determine if a connection across I-17 is

feasible. After evaluating community considerations

and examining technical elements such as traffic

configuration, station locations, potential future light rail

extensions and pedestrian and bicycle access, the project

team identified a proposed change to the approved route

for Phase II. The recommended route will cross I-17

near Mountain View Road and terminate on the west

side of the freeway near Metrocenter Mall. The Phoenix

City Council approved the recommended change in

November 2014. Next, Valley Metro will seek approval of

the recommended route change from the Valley Metro

Rail board of directors and other regional transportation

agencies in early 2015. Public outreach will continue,

identifying funding for the Metrocenter connection

and an environmental analysis will be completed. This

proposed change could help create jobs, connect our

community with sustainable transportation and create

new economic development opportunities, thus having a

positive effect on the Canyon Corridor.

Q:

How can citizens participate in discussions at the City level?

A:

The block watches and Metro Business

Alliance in this area are active participants that

work closely with the community, Metrocenter Mall,

surrounding properties and police precinct. These

organizations are a great way to participate; they are

not shy about expressing their opinions and I value the

information and input they provide. Our citizens are

always invited to attend public meetings and provide

public comment. Agendas and information on public

meetings are posted on phoenix.gov. Phoenix has many

boards and commissions where residents serve and

provide input to the mayor, city council, city manager

and staff on a variety of issues, and we are always in

search of members who are willing to serve. We realize

that our residents are busy, so the city has been working

to expand our reach by using convenient tools such as

social media and unique interactive sites. For example,

TalkTransportation.org was used to gain valuable input

on the future of transportation and MyPlanPHX.com

was used to share ideas and input in the city’s general

plan. I hope that residents use these and other avenues to

participate and provide input.
