CANYON CORRIDOR CONNECTION

G

RAND CANYON UNIVERSITY is providing professional

development for Alhambra High School teachers in the areas

of math, literacy and social/emotional health of students.

GCU is providing its professors a stipend of $250 for Alhambra’s

teachers to participate in one of the hybrid courses. Scott Adamson

is helping math teachers find new ways to engage students in the

more rigorous math expectations of the Arizona College and Career

Readiness Standards (AZCCRS). Carrie O’Donnell is providing social

studies and science teachers with content-based

literacy strategies. Holly Love is teaching the

social/emotional health sessions to improve

teacher-student relationships.

Principal Claudio Coria and Professional

Development Specialist Terrie Phillips

developed these topics to support additional

ongoing professional development provided by

both the school and the Phoenix Union High

School District. These hybrid courses will be

offered both in-person and online. This gives

Alhambra teachers an opportunity to learn and use technologies

such as Google Hangouts, which they can then incorporate in similar

formats for students in their classrooms. This unique professional

development collaboration is yet another way that Grand Canyon

University supports its community’s public high school, and is

representative of the investment that Alhambra makes in its students

by providing teachers with new and original staff

development opportunities.

Alhambra High School Boys’

Soccer is Undefeated!

The Alhambra boys’ soccer team finished 12-0, going undefeated

during the regular season. The Lions entered the Boys’ Soccer

Division I state championship as the number one seed. They beat

Corona del Sol in round one of the tournament on Feb. 4, before

losing to Sandra Day O’Connor in round two on Feb. 7.

The team is coached by Zachary Zamenski and is composed

of a diverse group of students representing many countries,

including the U.S., Mexico, Central African Republic, Thailand,

Sierra Leone, Tanzania and the Congo.

It was a great season—the team battled like true Lions!
