Slideshow: Public wedding proposal

GCU News Bureau Levi Conlow began planning his proposal to his girlfriend of four years, Rachel O’Brien, about a year ago. With the help of a few friends, his plan came together Thursday. Family and friends made a 7-foot-tall sign that invited the GCU campus to gather at the Promenade, in front of the Student Union, at 4:35 p.m. to see a live marriage proposal. Several hundred students, staff and faculty showed up to watch the big event. She said yes!

Slideshow: Back to School Clothing Drive awards

GCU News Bureau President Brian Mueller received a “Champion for Children” award for Grand Canyon University’s spirit of collaboration with the Back to School Clothing Drive, which annually distributes new school clothes, shoes, backpacks and supplies to 5,000 Title I elementary students in a weeklong event on campus. Dr. Antoinette Farmer, Honors College Dean and Vice President of Institutional Effectiveness, accepted the award on Mueller’s behalf. Dr. Jim Rice, a member of GCU’s Board of Directors and Hall of Fame, also received an award for his dedication to the clothing drive.

Photos by Devon Eatherly Special to GCU News Bureau Dozens of firefighters and police officers were on the scene, but this time it wasn’t an emergency. A Grand Canyon University alumnus, Phoenix Fire Captain Austin Moreland, gathered first responders recently to resuscitate the Cartwright Elementary School District’s vision for a mobile educational garden that will benefit students, teachers and the larger Maryvale community. It was a sad day last October when Phoenix Fire Department Engine 15 arrived to a vehicle fire in an empty lot adjacent to Bret R. Tarver Elementary School and the Marc T. Atkinson Middle School and found a school bus on fire because of vandalism. It was a total loss. The first responders later would learn that this was no ordinary bus. This was “Gus the Garden Bus,” designed to go around the Cartwright district and educate kids about plant cycles, plant sciences and healthy eating.  There was no funding for a replacement, so Moreland took it upon himself to gather firefighters, police officers, Phoenix and Cartwright Elementary School District officials and volunteers.
