Neyra Gonzalez-Bell and Misha Teague both found what they needed as nursing students at Grand Canyon University. They are just two examples of the types of graduates the College of Nursing and Health Care Professions is producing.

Health care reform is within our grasp, but only if the right people step forward and keep politics out of the debate. That was the message from former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Richard Carmona and other industry leaders Monday night at a symposium at GCU Arena.

The Albuquerque nursing cohorts celebrated their “first-born” Monday night as seven students representing the school’s first graduating class received their pins during a ceremony.

The College of Nursing has a new name and broader educational scope that reflect several interconnected fields in the health care industry.

Dr. Anne McNamara, dean for the College of Nursing, was chosen Thursday for the prestigious Athena Award, which honors women for their professional leadership, mentorship and community service.

Melanie Glaze, who earned a master’s degree from GCU in 2009, went from cleaning offices to a career in nursing and even persuaded her mother, then in her late 40s, to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse.

Dr. Cheryl Roat has exemplified GCU’s Christian mission and commitment to academics in a career that spans 25 years at the University. “Her goal is always the same, which is to produce the best possible nurses in the community,” says Dean Anne McNamara. “And she’s all about fairness, making sure people are treated the right way.”

There are enthusiastic graduates from GCU — and then there is Marian Barry. The College of Nursing grad took commencement ceremonies to a whole new level on a blistering, 112-degree day in Mesa, accepting her master’s degree in an unusual way.
