GCU’s inaugural speech and debate team won its division at a prestigious national competition for Christian universities, besting teams from Pepperdine University, Azusa Pacific Universities and Seattle Pacific Universities, among others.

Being shot and paralyzed did little to prevent Latisha Anderson from recognizing her path in life. The GCU online nursing graduate student will receive her diploma this week and put it to use as a nurse manager working in the geriatric psych unit at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center in Sun City.

It steals play dates from the little girl too drained to go outside, favorite ice cream from the teenager too nauseous to keep it down and carefree days from siblings whose parents are barely surviving the cruel journey thrust on their family. It holds hostage happiness, promotes job loss, wrecks marriages and wipes out bank accounts. All this, and yet the ultimate crime of cancer is even more unjust. At its worst, cancer robs a child of nearly 70 years of life. “I think cancer is pretty lousy no matter what age you are,” said Dr. Robert Arceci, medical director of the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, a beneficiary of the March 8 GCU Foundation Run to Fight Children’s Cancer. “But children’s cancer is a horrible thing. The profound trauma and tragedy of cancer in the very young is that it reverses the age progression. GCU’s Banner Boswell nursing site in Sun City rolled out the purple carpet for its community on Thursday, offering tours, student presentations and healthful food as February, known as National Heart Month, came to a close. The College of Nursing and Health Care Professions facility at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea will hold a similar event on Wednesday.

GCU students have heard about hunger and poverty, and some have experienced it. An event on campus on Thursday is about to bring them face-to-face with these critical global issues.

A student in the family nurse practitioner program in the College of Nursing and Health Care Professions will be awarded a $6,000 scholarship next spring, courtesy of the Health Care Clinics at select Walgreens.

The newest cohort program in GCU’s College of Nursing and Health Care Professions is located across the street from Banner Boswell Medical Center and represents a partnership with Banner Health. It is the seventh cohort in CONHCP.
