Police Neighborhood Patrol at GCU
In conjunction with the City of Phoenix’s Violence Impact Project along 27
th
Avenue, the City of
Phoenix Police Department offered a class to introduce 40 Spanish-speaking residents to the Phoenix
Neighbors on Patrol Program Aug. 7 at Grand Canyon University. This program empowers residents
to patrol their neighborhoods together
report crime in progress or suspicious
activity directly to officers on patrol. Parents
are concerned about the areas around
schools in the canyon corridor because of
drug sales and bullying affecting children
before and after school. They plan to expand
efforts that Vecinos Unidos Siempre Block
Watch began around the Granada Middle
School last year. Congratulations to all
the participants!
It is hard to believe it, but seven years have gone by in a flash. So it was with
a bittersweet farewell that Georgia Sepic said her goodbye to Serrano Village
Apartments on Aug. 11. In the final month of her stay, she gathered together
the younger refugee children to work with a very talented artist, Edgar
Fernandez, and his girlfriend, Aleida. Nick Fletcher, Youth Coordinator
at Serrano Village, also spent diligent time rounding up the children and
helping Edgar and Aleida. The connection to Edgar was made, once again,
thanks to the support of Dwight Amery from Maryvale Revitalization
Corporation. Edgar, Aleida, Nick and the youth spent several weeks drawing
inspiration and gathering memories of the children at Serrano. The result?
A beautiful mural that depicts all of the most cherished memories: a global
perspective united under the American flag, family, a love of learning and
of course, soccer. The bright colors, the tree of knowledge, outlines of the
world and most of all the outlines of people- united together all to illustrate
the sense of community that thrived in “The Village” at Serrano. It is a token
to remember the wonderful years spent at Serrano. We hope you take the
time to enjoy the mural as you leisurely stroll down Camelback. Cherished
memories … forever!
