Alhambra’s STEM Team
Earns National Awards!
W
elcome to the 2014-15
school year. The Alhambra
team is gearing up for
another successful year of learning.
At Alhambra, we empower students
to believe in, practice and live the
American Dream. To many, the
American Dream is a sought-after
ideal that represents freedom,
prosperity and equality; and at
Alhambra, our students’ American
Dream begins when they walk
through our doors. The American
Dream is hope, it is opportunity
and it is achieving success.
In the Alhambra Elementary School District, we instill in our students
the promise of the American Dream. James Truslow Adams, an
American writer and historian, described the American Dream: “Life
should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity
for each according to ability or achievement regardless of social class
or circumstances of birth.” Everything we do at Alhambra is based on
this premise: ensuring our students are prepared for college, careers and
leading successful lives.
Alhambra is rich in diversity, representing countries all over the
world. Our dedicated teachers are providing high-quality instruction
using Arizona’s College and Career Ready Standards. Alhambra has
implemented these new teaching standards for three years; and through
rigorous instruction, our students will be prepared for high school,
college and careers.
At Alhambra, we capture kids’ hearts, we embrace the world around
us and we provide a high-quality education for every child. This is the
keystone to our country’s promise. Our students’ futures depend on us,
and we take our mission seriously. Children deserve nothing less.
I look forward to a successful school year, and extend an invitation to you to
visit Alhambra and experience America’s new academic reality!
Believe!

The Alhambra Elementary School District’s MESA (Math, Engineering and
Science Achievement) Team, from Montebello School, led by advisor Kelby
Milgrim, earned two awards at the MESA National Challenge in Portland,
Ore., in June. The national challenge was to design, engineer and operate a
low-cost, environmentally sustainable, easy-to-operate prosthetic arm that
could perform a variety of real life tasks such as picking up everyday items and
placing them in a box and tossing items into a bucket.
Alhambra’s Montebello MESA Team earned first place in the country in the
“Design Efficiency” category and a third place award in the “Technical Paper”
category. According to Superintendent Dr. Karen Williams, “The Alhambra team
defied all odds and showcased that all children can achieve their dreams if they
work hard. I believe that every child is entitled to a high-quality education and
an opportunity to live the American Dream, and our MESA team worked hard,
spent their summer vacation preparing for the competition and demonstrated
how dreams really do become a reality!” This was a first-in-a-lifetime
opportunity for the Alhambra students. They demonstrated their ability to
design, write, compete and win top rankings in a national competition, and we
are very proud of their accomplishments.
The Alhambra Elementary School District would like to express our tremendous
appreciation to President and CEO Brian Mueller from Grand Canyon University,
for sponsoring the Alhambra MESA Team’s trip to Portland. According to Dr.
Williams, “I extend a special thanks to the entire Grand Canyon University team
for sponsoring our children, which enabled them to compete nationally and
experience learning with other students from across the nation. Grand Canyon
University’s commitment to enriching the community is a wise investment and
will change lives.”
