Campus may look empty compared to more than 26,000 ground students scurrying to classes during fall and spring semesters, but there is still a lot of work being done during the summer heat at Grand Canyon University.
This summer, a record 1,248 students are scheduled to live in four campus apartment complexes: Antelope, Jerome, Cactus and Diamondback.
To live on campus during the summer, students must be an undergraduate student (age 17-25) taking at least one credit hour or a verified student worker.
Class instruction began Monday, and the first session runs through June 23. Session B is June 24-Aug. 11.
Purple-scrubbed nursing students from the College of Nursing and Health Care Professions remain a visible in-person force on campus during the summer. All prelicensure nursing students are here attending class, skills labs, simulations and disperse into the community for their clinicals.
College of Humanities and Social Sciences evening cohorts in clinical mental health counseling and social work are also on campus.
And many students are taking online courses while living on campus.
For the second summer, Ellie Brazell decided to take summer courses so she could graduate a semester earlier than four years – by next December. The marketing major and entrepreneur minor is taking two summer courses while working in marketing for Grand Canyon Education, while her sister is taking nursing courses.
“I want to graduate early to cut down my cost of college,” she said.
While it's slower on campus, the Canyon Activities Board will hold three events, one each month. Although yet to be titled, they are:
- 11 a.m.-1 p.m., May 16, Union Promenade. Stop by for Eegee’s and Dune movie-themed giveaways.
- 2-4 p.m. June 13, Antelope Pool. Enjoy poolside ice cream floats and giveaways (floats, towels, beach chairs and more.)
- 11 a.m.-1 p.m. July 11, Student Union. Cool off from the summer heat with an ice cream bar.
Several campus eateries are open with summer hours, including Einstein Bros. Bagels, Habit Burger Grill, GCBC, Qdoba in the Student Union, the Grid, Chick-fil-A and Panda Express (Thur.-Sun.) on Lopes Way, the Herd Stop in Antelope and Havoc House.
