The first of eight spring commencement ceremonies at Grand Canyon University featured the Colangelo College of Business and the College of Fine Arts and Production. The student speaker, Josh McGuire, has been a thriving entrepreneur on campus, but he’s not the only CCOB grad who has worked hard. For them, it’s not business as usual.

Dr. Kelly Damron, who teaches accounting in the Colangelo College of Business, recently won a major award for the way she makes her classroom come alive. How does she do it? You might say she has a Monopoly on her ideas, and she’s never in Jeopardy of students thinking her class is dull.

Marco Burgarello, who graduates from Grand Canyon University this week, had an idea: He wanted to be a bright light for youths at an Arizona Juvenile Corrections facility. Pretty soon, he and 30 other GCU students were doing their ministry twice a week, and now he has received a prestigious two-year fellowship from Venture for America.

“We’re here tonight to hopefully, not only mourn together and remember together, but to celebrate their lives together,” Dr. Tim Griffin, Dean of Students, said at Tuesday night’s Celebration of Life ceremony. The GCU community honored the lives of Christian Applegate, Roy Pietrek, Keisha Nicole Oyola Perales, Dr. Tiffany Mealman and Taylor White.

Grand Canyon University’s Collegiate DECA chapter qualified its largest contingent ever for the International Career Development Conference (ICDC) last week in Washington, D.C., and four entries made the top 10. But they also got noticed for what they were wearing and just happened to run into a VIP from GCU.

Conscious Capitalism Arizona, which seeks to turn business into a force for good in this state, did a lot of good Wednesday afternoon in GCU Arena with two inaugural events. The Investment Seminar drew a big crowd, and then the Collegiate Challenge handed out more than $60,000 in prizes — including $5,000-plus to a GCU startup, Prophet Insight.
