Grill closed tomorrow, Friday and Saturday. Opening Monday. ● Cobrizo’s (Thunder Alley, Mexican cuisine): 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mon-Fri, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sat-Sun. Opening Monday. ● Jazzman Café (Thunder Alley, coffee shop): 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Mon-Fri, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sat-Sun. Sixteen Cities will be part of Grand Canyon University’s Welcome Week festivities with a concert in Antelope Gym on August 29 at 8:30 p.m. Free Admission. Doors open at 7:45 p.m.

Monday, August 3, 2009, was pretty much a typical August day in Phoenix — hot, in other words — but it also was my first day in my new position at my new place of employment. I was starting a position as director of academic excellence — whatever that meant — at the College of Education for Grand Canyon University. As I look back over the last two years, I cannot help but marvel at the change that has overtaken this once-sleepy university.

GCU’s Lopes Department celebrated its one-year anniversary this week, complete with birthday cake at the Canyon Café for the team of 50 student workers and two managers. The department, which pre-evaluates transcripts for prospective students, began with 18 workers last August and continues to grow in step with the University.

Career Services has always been the place to go for finding employment on campus, but now students have even more reason to visit the center, located in the Student Union. Although returning students will find Career Services in the same place, they will find new faces eager to help them with their employment needs.

Meet Kris Hayes. He loves sports. Water polo, flag football, sand volleyball, you name it, Kris probably enjoys playing it. One year into his role as the GCU’s campus pastor, Tim Griffin is taking on an even larger role. In his own words, he is “drinking from the fire hose.” In July, GCU administration promoted Griffin to vice president of student services and dean of students. He will continue in his responsibilities as campus pastor, but he also will oversee the offices of Student Life and Spiritual Life, Career Services and Event Services.

Meet Sarah Ashley! You know all those events you plan on attending on campus…well, there’s a really good chance Sarah had something to do with it!
