In addition to its monetary contribution, GCU

is doing its part through the contributions of its

students, such as Mary

Khorany, a sophomore who

wants to use her business

management major to work

with local missions and

nonprofit organizations.

Khorany is on the refugee

ministry team of GCU’s

Local Outreach, Global

Outreach (LOGO), which

couldn’t be more appropriate. Her family came

here from Iraq when she was two and lived in West

Phoenix for her first three years here. Even today,

they hear horror stories from family and friends

in their former home in Irbil, in the northern Iraq

province of Kurdistan — stories of people fearing

the advance of Islamic State rebels and fleeing to

Turkey and other safe havens.

“Even having family there, I can’t fathom what’s

going on,” she said.

While she respects and admires the work that

GCU does in overseas missions, Khorany said her

focus is local.

“The whole time I’ve been at GCU, my heart

has been focused on the local neighborhood,” she

said. “It’s exciting to see more of the student body

get excited about it, too. That’s what I love about

it — there’s a need and we fulfill that need.”
