SAFETY AND SECURITY

VIP Accomplishments

August 2015

Community Speaks out on VIP

harassed, groped and robbed on their way to and

from school, Coria said.

Thieves used to wait for students before arrival

and after dismissal, he said. Some drove

alongside students, stole their cell phones

and computers, and sped away. Aggressive

panhandlers demanded money. Dealers

sold drugs.

But since the formation of the crime-fighting

partnership, Coria has pointed police to specific

corners and parking lots that he called “hot

spots,” places where adults not associated

with the school at times had loitered and

bothered students.

“Police cleared them out,” Coria said.

Student population at Alhambra has grown from

2,640 in the 2011-12 school year to 2,883 this

year, Coria said, attributing the influx not only

to the initiative, but also to other partnerships

with GCU, such as free tutoring, summer

science, technology, engineering and math

(STEM) classes and a program that enables

Alhambra students to earn college credits

for free.

“Our levels of learning are helped by the level of

safety,” Coria said. “GCU has helped us to be a

better place.”

The streets around GCU are becoming friendlier

too, police noted.

“When you make a community attractive,

people want to be part of that,” Robinson said.

“That’s what we are seeing around GCU.”

SAVE THE DATE

We hope you can join us for our next meeting.

WHEN: Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 6 pm

WHERE: Helen Drake Senior Center

7600 N. 27th Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85051

ASU survey

The top four “Very Important” issues identified as:

• Presence of drug houses 83.6%

• Visible drug dealing and activity 82.7%

• Prostitution 80.9%

• Homeless camps 76.4%

Order Maintenance

Met with two apartment property owners

to discuss the Crime Free Multi Housing

Program, current criminal activity

at the property and importance of

“authority to arrest.”

• Rehoboth Place Apartments

• Canyon Palms Apartments

Conducted investigations on two suspected

drug locations, resulting in three arrests on

numerous felony charges, seizure of 15 grams

of heroin and actionable intelligence on

additional locations.

Police, Human Services and Neighborhood

Services encountered 12 homeless individuals

offering them service and shelter; five

declined assistance and five have moved on

or failed to show up for appointment; two are

waiting for apartment approval.

Street Prostitution

Prostitution sweeps in the VIP Area resulted

in 31 prostitution arrests and six suspects

arrested on drug-related charges.

Problem Locations

Opened 184 code compliance (e.g. weeds,

blight and improper property maintenance)

cases during this reporting period, actively

resolving 150 cases and 305 cases closed

since program tracking began in May.

Resolved all 873 graffiti issues for this

reporting period.

Addressed 115 issues (e.g. bulk trash,

container repair/replace, recycle container

request, overgrown vegetation) in this

reporting period.

Applications received for 111 Building Permits

this month (86 issued and 25 pending).

Homelessness is a big issue in the

VIP corridor, especially along

Interstate 17. When you give money

to panhandlers, you don’t know if

that buck is going to buy a sandwich

or feed an addiction. Please give

generously to those charitable

organizations that provide support

service to homeless people.

Lane Ave Block Watch

The Violence Impact Project,

although officially does not cover the

Alhambra Neighborhood, has made

a positive impact. Two drug houses

are now out of commission; there

has been considerably less graffiti

on our residences and burglaries are

dropping. We appreciate the efforts

of this special program.

– Diane Harris, President

Alhambra Neighborhood Association
