Seniors draw inspiration from Design Showcase

Wednesday’s Digital Design Showcase on the Quad displayed the work of 67 graduating seniors who hope to use their skills to positively impact the world. “I think they will have a bit more fortitude for change,” Digital Design Director Sheila Schumacher said. “This particular graduating class spent two, almost three semesters in the middle of COVID and, for many of them, it was a jolt.”

Short film creates animation opportunities for alums

Animation and visual effects instructor Richie Jimenez saw a need for more local opportunities for students to work in the animation field, so with the help of project partner Kevin Palmer, more opportunities were created. Through the creation of an animated short titled “Fishing for the Soul” the duo has hired on three GCU alumni to work on the project and hope to continue to raise funds via the project’s Kickstarter. “By including past students on the production team, Richie is showing first-hand how the skills learned in our Digital Design program can be put to work,” Digital Design Director Sheila Schumacher said. “As a mentor and leader for the students, he always looks for ways to challenge them to tell better stories and create engaging characters.”

Fine Arts goes all out to improvise for students

The College of Fine Arts and Production is meeting the effects of the pandemic head-on. Its innovations include outdoor performances, master classes with industry professionals, livestreaming and a little of Disney’s “The Mandalorian” thrown in for good measure. COFAP Dean Claude Pensis calls it a “fun challenge.”

Seniors’ skills stand out at Design Showcase

The Senior Design Showcase on Tuesday night featured 33 students, many of whom have been active in obtaining internships and several who already have received employment offers. Sheila Schumacher, Director of the Digital Design program, said GCU graduates are making an impact in Arizona but also are taking their skills to other parts of the country.

Seniors’ talents on full display at Design Showcase

Two days before commencement, 57 design students filled four classrooms in the College of Fine Arts and Production Building on Tuesday to display their portfolios for their peers and families at the Senior Design Showcase. Animations, photography, marketing designs and numerous other forms of artwork allowed viewers to get a better idea of who these students are. “Everyone’s setup is their own,” Elizabeth Segura said. “Every year you have something different. There’s different people, different things that they have to offer. I think it’s pretty cool every year to see the variety.”
