Stress melts away to joy for SIS scholarship winners

When the surprise announcement comes, Megan Serafini says you can see the “stress melt away” from their faces. The SIS and External Scholarships Director at GCU joined students in breaking the news virtually to 78 more Students Inspiring Students scholars. For Natalia Perales, it meant she could pick up the phone and call her parents in Mexico, who sent her to the U.S. to live and get an education. “It was always motivation for me to do it for my parents since they never had opportunities like I had. They gave them to me to come to school here,” she said.

Scholarship winner eager to give back to community

After GCU student Angel Cervantes recently won an Arizona Justice Educators Association Scholarship, he gave credit to everyone else. That includes his parents, who run Hard Knocks Gym in Phoenix, and teacher Kevin Walling, Chair of Justice Studies, Government and History at GCU. “You can learn from everybody – athletes, my mom, mentors in my life have all taught me to have an open ear,” said Cervantes, who wants to be a detective and restore faith in law enforcement in his community.

Grateful SIS scholarship recipients warm Arena

It was a night of celebration and heartfelt emotions in the GCU Arena. A large gathering of scholarship recipients, graduates and their families at the Students Inspiring Students Scholarship Reception heard what the program means to neighborhood students and community. Freshman SIS scholar Arianna Torres was overcome as she thanked her parents. “Mom and Dad, I love you guys both so much. Thank you for all the sacrifices you guys made to put me in the position I am in today,” Torres said.

SIS scholarship winners make their parents proud

Ana Herrera joined a long list of Students Inspiring Students Scholarship recipients who honor their parents’ sacrifices when it was announced that they could attend GCU on a full-tuition scholarship. Her mother wasn’t there to give her a hug, but Herrera knew she was proud. It’s just one of the many inspirational SIS stories that unfolded when the scholarships were handed out April 27 and on Tuesday.

Graduate’s journey becomes full ride to law school

David Salgado knew it was a tough road to take. The Grand Canyon University graduate and IT employee wanted to pass the Law School Admission Test (LSAT), be accepted into a law school and earn a scholarship to pay for it. There were a lot of twists and turns along the way. But he managed a rarity — a full scholarship to law school. His west Phoenix parents jumped for joy. None of the extended family had ever been to college, much less law school. They had canceled vacation to plan on helping to pay for it. Salgado will go to Gonzaga School of Law on the Thomas More Scholarship.
