Rescue Mission alums receive GCU scholarships

There was no shortage of inspirational redemption stories at Wednesday’s Phoenix Rescue Mission Signing Event as three of four scholarship recipients signed their letter of intent to attend the University in the fall. The recipients, who have completed the nonprofit’s Recovery Program, include Amanda Jaramillo, Jacqueline Mix, Brian Farretta and GCU 2019 alum Jesse Dalla Riva. “These people have had some significant challenges and they’ve taken the first step now, they’ve gone through the Phoenix Rescue Mission Program, they’ve come out of it successfully and they’ve started their new life,” said GCU President Brian Mueller. “For us to be able to offer them this opportunity to take their life now to a whole new level is a blessing.”

Helping the Rescue Mission is an easy sell for GCU

GCU has partnered with Phoenix Rescue Mission in many ways over the years, from helping the nonprofit’s restaurant, Mission Possible Cafe, get off the ground, to the organization being a clinical rotation site for the University’s prelicensure nursing students, to GCU offering scholarships to those who have gone through the Rescue Mission’s Transformations Recovery Program. The latest partnership is the Lope Shop’s Give Back Get Back campaign, in which clothing, shoes and other items will be donated to the nonprofit. GCU’s work with Phoenix Rescue Mission was featured in the Community Relations Department’s latest Town Hall Informational.

Q&A: Dr. Timothy Larkin, volunteer award winner

Seven years of teaching and facilitating Bible Study for residents of Phoenix Rescue Mission earned GCU sociology professor Dr. Timothy Larkin the Outstanding Teaching Award for 2018 from the Changing Lives Center for Women & Children, a shelter at PRM. “Such activity for me keeps me seeing with Christ-centered spiritual eyes and experiencing joy,” said Larkin, who provided insight in a Q&A with GCU Today.

GCU connects with Phoenix Rescue Mission

A partnership between GCU and Phoenix Rescue Mission produced toys, games and household goods for needy children and hope for recovering adults, residents of PRM who attended the Lopes women’s basketball game Tuesday night at GCU Arena. “It is crazy to think I am coming to something like this, a GCU basketball game,’’ said PRM resident Kassandra Elson. “This is how I am spending my free time rather than doing things that put me in prison.’’
