GCU students excel again at Kennedy Center festival

The GCU Theatre Department had another big year at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. Brandon Brown and Abby Yee made it to the finals of the Irene Ryan Acting Competition, and Morgan McCall was offered a $1,500 scholarship to the California Institute of the Arts program. “I really focus on the feedback that they get at this level of performance more than if they get trophies,” Acting instructor Michael Kary said. “We have been doing better and better. I think that our school has grown in reputation because of its presence at the festival over the last few years.”

Theatre grad earns scholarship for lighting design

When she started her undergraduate career in the College of Fine Arts and Production, Rachel Schumacher just loved to act. Now, four years and exposure to the different areas within theatre later, Schumacher has accepted a full-ride scholarship in lighting design from the University of Connecticut and plans to begin this fall.

Students give huge props to Kennedy Center trip

This year’s Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival showcased how much talent the College of Fine Arts and Production’s Theater Department really has. Three GCU students made it to the semifinals in their respective regional categories, and two took second place. Some students even came home with scholarships and job interviews. “We had teachers as well as students from all kinds of other schools stop us a number of times and tell us how impressed they were with our students,” COFAP Assistant Dean William Symington said.
