Honors students honored in a big way at banquet

Students didn’t have to hop on a plane Monday evening to enjoy a “Night in New York,” the theme of the Honors College Banquet in GCU Arena. The event included a catered dinner, New York-themed trivia and live music performed by Honors College Director of Operations Dennis Williams and his wife, Julianne. Senior Kendall Smith was given the Dean’s Choice Award, Gaige Graham was named the Outstanding Senior, Lena-May Haught was a popular choice for the Giving Back Award and Camden Marasco won the Inspirational Leader Award.

Naegeli promoted to dean of growing Honors College

If you would have told Dr. Breanna Naegeli, when she first started working for the Honors College, that less than a decade later that she would be named the dean of the college, she never would have believed it. Monday afternoon, after 3 1/2 years as the college’s associate dean, Naegeli officially was named Dean during the Spring Faculty Conference. “The timing feels right, and it feels great to step into that dean role now that there is more experience under my belt and a growing vision ready to execute upon,” she said.

Conference gives Honors students leadership lesson

It was an action-packed weekend for the Honors College and its students. Its annual Next Generation Leadership Conference, “Serve with your Story,” was organized by students for students and provided attendees with the opportunity to learn from and network with industry professionals from a variety of fields. Speakers shared their individual stories and journeys with students, all while emphasizing the importance of serving others. “I really do feel like GCU attracts talented and mission-oriented students,” said Ryan Corry, Chief Strategy Officer for St. Vincent de Paul.

PAC program graduates raise bar at awards dinner

Just when Honors College Dean Dr. Breanna Naegeli and Honors Program Manager Dennis Williams thought they had created a maximum point total that no one could reach in their PAC Professional Development Program, students proved it attainable. Fifty Honors College students gathered at Canyon 49 Grill on Wednesday night to celebrate the completion of this year’s PAC (Professional, Academic and Career), and Jessica Landes’ emotional response showed how much it meant to her to win the competition.

Inaugural Day of Giving makes powerful debut

For a university that places such a high emphasis on giving back to the community, adding GCU’s first annual Day of Giving to the calendar just made sense. More than 2,000 donations were made during the 24-hour blitz and will help fund a number of valuable causes on campus. “I’m really impressed with how many donors are interested in giving back to the community here,” Director of Annual Giving Cherylann Galdi said. “As Christians, we have a heart for others, and it really showed today.”

Honors College surpasses 1,000 graduates

When the Honors Institute debuted with 59 students in 2013, no one could have known how far it would come just eight years later. As the University prepares to celebrate another graduating class, the Honors College will celebrate its own impressive accomplishment — surpassing 1,000 graduates. “It’s great that we’ve reached this milestone of 1,000 graduates, we are thrilled and ready to celebrate; but, this is definitely not the last chapter in our book,” said Honors College Associate Dean Dr. Breanna Naegeli. “There is plenty more to come, and we’re excited to keep challenging ourselves and our program to rise to the occasion.”

James Bond-themed banquet fetes Honors students

Another successful academic year wouldn’t be complete without an Honors College Banquet to celebrate the students’ accomplishments. They were recognized Wednesday for their hard work during the pandemic. “We’re extremely proud,” Program Manager Dennis Williams said. “It’s been a very challenging year for them, but we’ve seen so many of our students step up as leaders, step up in all these areas. This is, I think, going to be an extra special year.”

Honors College conference out front on leadership

It was a big weekend full of connection building and leadership within the Honors College. This year, the Honors College hosted their annual Leadership Conference in a hybrid format, allowing students to choose whether they would like to participate in person or via Zoom. Doing so brought in a record number of attendees for the event. “I Think that just goes to show how much students are wanting to have this experience,” Honors College Program Manager Dennis Williams said. “It’s certainly well above any numbers we’ve had for this event when you combine the Zoom attendees with our live attendees.”

Degrees of leadership: Honors College staff unites

The Honors College leaders showed last year that their teamwork goes beyond their work duties — five of them earned graduate degrees. Associate Dean Dr. Breanna Naegeli finished work on her doctorate, while Program Managers Dennis Williams, Cathleen Daly and Anna Cofrancesco and Program Development Specialist Faith Beatty all received their master’s degrees. “I feel as though this story illustrates the support we have for one another both personally and professionally,” Naegeli said.

Canyon 49 dinner celebrates Honors PAC students

They gathered Wednesday night on Canyon 49 Grill’s outdoor patio for a socially distanced dinner and PAC (Professional, Academic and Career) awards ceremony. The top three were Andrew Jennings, Ethan Connery and Ashley Larson.
