Commencement speech evokes happy memories

As Kendall Smith looked out to the audience at Friday evening’s Spring Commencement ceremony, she couldn’t help but reflect on her time at the University. An active member of the Honors College and the College of Arts and Media, she considered the opportunity to be the student speaker the perfect end to a memorable four-year journey at GCU. Smith expressed her gratitude in her speech for the love and care the university puts into every students experience. “I hope that students, when they graduate, that they’re proud to Lopes,” she said. “I hope all the graduates feel very thankful for all GCU has done for them.”

Film Festival shows students’ resolve to create

Film students were excited to be back in Ethington Theatre on Thursday evening for the GCU Film Festival after it had to be held outdoors last year. The pandemic forced that move and also was evident in many of the 13 films that were shown. “The students really were facing a lot of changes, and the way they worked around it was amazing,” Film Department Director Lisa Tervo said.

College of Arts and Media: a new era for the arts

It’s been quite the year for students in the arts at GCU. One big change: a name change from the College of Fine Arts and Production to the College of Arts and Media. The new name better represent the college’s push toward collaboration and its degree offerings. “I’m excited for this rebranding of our college, because I feel it better represents who we are and where we’re going,” said Dance Director Bekki Price.

Film star has acted to keep the faith in her industry

The entertainment industry can be an intimidating place, But luckily for COFAP students, the college hosted a Q+A session with “Identity Crisis” actress Laura Leigh Turner to learn more about what to expect after college. From the importance of of finding a Christian community to the patience that comes with navigating through auditions, Turner shared her journey with attendees. “This is exactly the kind of experiences that we want our students to have,” COFAP Dean Dr. Craig Detweiler said. “To have working professionals coming to campus, showing students how it’s done and sharing how their faith inspires their art.”

‘Identity Crisis’ movie casts campus in starring role

Filming has begun on campus for Andrea and Alexandra Boylan’s newest movie, “Identity Crisis.” It contains a faith-filled message and will continue shooting until Jan. 28 as it incorporates GCU students, faculty and alumni into the movie-making process. “It’s just special here,” said Alexandra, who first visited campus last year with her sister. “I feel like the spirit of the Lord is very alive and well at GCU, and we can feel it.”

New dean brings diverse background to Fine Arts

When asked whether he would give up the church or give up Hollywood, Dr. Craig Detweiler replied with his 25-year career of combining the two. Now, the longtime educator is bringing his knowledge and skills into his new role as dean of the College of Fine Arts and Production. “I’m excited about GCU’s deep and abiding faith combined with the artistry and creativity of both the professors and students,” he said. “We can both enlighten and entertain at the same time.”
