Baseball competition boosts turkey donations

The competitive nature of GCU’s baseball players paid off in successful marketing techniques Saturday as the Lopes encouraged shoppers at the Moon Valley Safeway to donate $1,334.73 and a record 132 turkeys for the St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance Super Saturday Turkey Drive. “They became advocates for food insecurity in Arizona,” said Debbie Accomazzo, GCU Community Outreach Manager.

It’s clubhouse to firehouse for former GCU players

Like the laces of a tightly wound baseball, a powerful bond has developed between GCU baseball and the firefighting community in the Valley. More than a dozen former Lopes baseball players have transitioned into local firefighting. The lessons they learned as student-athletes have transferred exceptionally well to their service-oriented and challenging careers, and they are drawn to the plethora of similarities between baseball and firefighting.
