'Zoey' earns top honor at GCU Film Festival

GCU News Bureau

The atmosphere around Ethington Theatre over the weekend was vibrant as dozens of students and other visitors showed up each evening of the three-day GCU Film Festival to view some of the top short films by students in the College of Fine Arts and Production.

The award for Best Picture went to “Zoey,” a found-footage style film of a couple’s home video for their unborn child (see above), by junior Anthony DiMaria, 2014 alumnus Jeff Dykhuizen and seniors Jeremy Bridges and Samuel Varghese. The heartwarming film starring Varghese and Rebekah Dipple also won Best Drama and other accolades at the biannual 48-Hour Inter-School Film Challenge in November.

DiMaria's “All About that Mace” music video parody of the Meghan Trainor song “All About that Base” captured the Crowd Favorite Award.

Other winners included films in the categories of Animation (“Prodigal Lego” by Maya James), Comedy (“iCam” by Elliott de Neve), Documentary (“Waking Up” by Logan Laurian), Faith (“Jesus Flipped the Script” by Taylor Melody) and Music Video (“Rewind” by Tyler McDonald).

Bible Verse

"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me." (Galatians 2:20)
