Video: Biggest, most emotional Ignite ceremony

GCU News Bureau

They came (in unprecedented numbers).

They sang (louder than ever before).

They connected (in a big way with spiritual life at Grand Canyon University).

The Ignite ceremony Thursday night was an experience for anyone who was there. Students, the vast majority of them incoming freshmen, filled the lower bowl of GCU Arena and even spilled into the upper deck. After standing in a line that stretched all the way to Lopes Way, students still were streaming in 15 minutes after it started.

They stayed on their feet the entire time as the all-student Worship team played for a full hour. It was deeply moving as everyone joined in the lyrics:

I'm a child of God. Yes I am.

You are good ... good ... ohhhhh.

You're never gonna let, never gonna let me dowwwwwwn.

Dr. Tim Griffin, Pastor and Dean of Students, had a hard time containing his emotions. So did Danielle Rinnier, Director of Spiritual Life.

The music was followed by the traditional lighting ceremony on the Quad, which the crowd almost filled. When everyone turned on their cellphone flashlights, the glow was overwhelming.

It was night to remember, and GCU Today commemorated it with the video above. You also can listen to the entire musical performance by clicking here.

Bible Verse

All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth. (Hebrews 11:13)
