Summer Cancer-Campers Enjoy Break at GCU

A group of 12 children from the American Cancer Society’s Camp Sunrise summer program joined GCU’s Jose Moreno and Sussely Morales for basketball, bowling, and other events on campus as part of a field trip to take their minds off the hospital-related realities waiting at home.

Led by volunteers, the children ages 3-7 included a few who’ve undergone cancer treatments at Phoenix Children’s Hospital and other Valley healthcare centers. Other children on the field trip have siblings impacted by childhood cancer. For many children, seeing a brother or sister struggling through treatments can be stressful and confusing. Camp Sunrise aims to give them a place to be kids and connect with other youngsters going through similar experiences.

GCU is committed to assisting community organizations focused on fighting childhood cancer. In March, the second Run to Fight Children’s Cancer raised $40,000 for the non-profit Children’s Cancer Network.
