Recent studies show that 1 in 20 college males and 1 in 5 college females are sexually assaulted. The Associated Students of Grand Canyon University aims to change that.

The It’s On Us campaign aims to reach the student population through its pledge and awareness efforts.

The student governors are hosting a week of activities for the fourth annual “It’s On Us,” a national campaign against sexual assault. It kicked off Monday with a pledge booth at the Union Promenade and wraps up with a rally on Friday.

The pledge drive encouraged students to create a community where sexual assault is unacceptable and survivors are supported. Those who signed the pledge also were asked to finish the sentence “I can be the solution by ...” on note cards, which then were hung up for others to see.

Club advocate Shelby Meyers said, “Although it’s a little different on our campus, sexual assault is something that is very prevalent on college campuses, and it’s important to bring awareness.

“Sexual assault is something that should not be a thing. I know people that have been sexually assaulted, and I want to do everything in my power to eradicate it.”

ASGCU will be hosting events throughout the week for students to discuss ways to end sexual assault. The week also includes self-defense classes, bystander education and a movie night event showing "Perks of Being a Wallflower."

Note cards were a visual representation of a pledge students had taken.

The following is the calendar of activities ASGCU is hosting the rest of the week:

Tuesday: Pledge drive table,  11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Union Promenade. Bystander awareness training, 6-8 p.m. at Building 57, rooms 130 and 131.

Bible Verse

All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth. (Hebrews 11:13)
