A team of GCU students – Ben Oswalt, Dalton Lesser and Jake Rintoul – placed third out of 23 teams in the academic bowl at the recent Southwest American College of Sports Medicine Annual Meeting in Irvine, California.
“Our teams always show up and do exceptionally well at these academic competitions, highlighting the preparation our exercise science curriculum provides,” said exercise science professor Dr. Zach Zeigler.
Ten students attended the meeting, five of them presenting posters on their research projects. Each project will be published in the next edition of the International Journal of Exercise Science. The papers to be published are:
- “Aerobic Fitness Outperforms Body Composition in Predicting ACFT Scores Among ROTC Cadets and Active Military Personnel.” By Megan Bratetic, Jake Laufenberg, Kaitlyn Wabakken, Dr. Anthony Acevedo and Dr. Zachary Zeigler.
- “The Impact of Physical Fitness and Activity on GPA in College Students.” By Wes Stergious, Amanda Callaghan, Nick Urias, Claire Lindemier and Dr. Zachary Zeigler.
- “Postural Influences on Post-exercise Hypotension in Normotensive Young Adults.” By Jake Laufenberg, Kannon Jacobson, Megan Bratetic, Katilyn Wabakken, Cody Takenaka, Kathy Ostrander and Dr. Zachary Zeigler.
- “Waist Circumference as a Potential Predictor of Post-Exercise Hypotension Response in College-Aged Subjects: A Pilot Study.” By Kaitlyn Wabakken, Cody Takenaka, Braden Gallardo, Kayley Brennan, Marribell Maldonado, Josh Aguilera, Makenna Petersen, Michael Swift and Dr. Zachary Zeigler.
- “Impact of Time of Day and Gender on Power Output in Division I Athletes.” By Nicholas Urias, Kennedy Krebs, Dalton Lesser, Zachary Farrel and Dr. Zachary Zeigler.
Nineteen undergraduates will get their name on a published work.
Also at the meeting, Zeigler gave an oral presentation highlighting the work the exercise science lab has done in the area of COVID-19 and weight gain, exercise and mask wearing.
