The Career Services Center is proud to announce its first Student Worker of the Month, Katie Bremerthon.
Bremerthon is a senior elementary education major who works at both the Peoria Boys & Girls Club as well as Maryland Elementary School. She is a tutor to many of the children she works with, often helping them with math and language.
“Katie has become an indispensible part of our team,” says Amanda Quine, a social worker at Maryland Elementary. “She volunteers her time well beyond what is required of her to help out with our little ones.”
Quine credits Bremerthon for taking more leadership in the classroom and coming out of her shell with the students and teachers. The time she has given has proven invaluable to the school, says Quine, adding that can see the development in Bremerthon as well.
Bremerthon chose GCU because she loved the small class sizes and the quality of instruction available in the College of Education. She is the first person in her family to go to college and wanted to make sure it would be a positive experience.
“I really liked the opportunity to go to Chapel and the other spiritual aspects of campus,” she says. “I’ve always been involved at church, so this seemed like the right school for me.”
Her goal is to work as a kindergarten teacher, to get children hooked on learning at an early age.
“I love to see the expression on their face when a kid ‘gets’ something,” she says. “Kindergarten is a great place to instill a love for learning and help kids get excited about school.”
Bremerthon has volunteered at her church for many years and was bitten by the teaching bug when in high school she helped teach children from birth to six years old. At the same time, she was able to join a future teachers group and shadowed elementary teachers in the classroom.
As her time at GCU nears its close, Bremerthon is looking forward to student teaching in the spring. She hopes to student-teach at Maryland Elementary and continue her experience with the children there.
