The Office of Campus Life has selected sophomore Derek Drake as its first Student Leader of the Month for 2010-11.
Drake is a double major in Christian studies and music. He is also a life leader in Hegel Hall and a worship leader with the Gathering band.
Following graduation, he plans to pursue full-time ministry, a role he feels called by God to fulfill.
“Singing and worship or preaching and teaching,” he says. “Not sure yet, but I know my life will be in ministry.”
Drake says you have to be open to God to be able to receive from Him. Before he leads worship, he always spends time alone with God to allow Him to speak to him.
So far, his young life has been full of ministry opportunities. He led or participated in worship in high school, and he has been singing in church for even longer.
His music ministry continues with his involvement in the New Life Choir, a traveling choir that will promote GCU through worship ministry in churches and schools.
Back in the dorm, he works with his life groups to focus on relationships.
“Being a life leader is an opportunity for me to pour into other young men,” he says. “These are guys that all have the same struggles. We can hold each other accountable and develop real relationships.”
Drake believes the role of student leaders on campus is to set an example for other students on how to become involved.
“We’re here to help students find their way on campus and find their identity in Christ,” he says.
