Eight Antelope fall and winter sports teams participated Wednesday evening in “Clash of the Titans,” an end-of-the-year event organized by strength and conditioning coach Chuck Howard and his Performance Athletics staff.

On the men’s side, the soccer team prevailed against a field that also included basketball, wrestling and swimming. On the women’s side, volleyball came in first against basketball, soccer and swimming.

The athletes were served dinner afterward on the Mariposa Lawn.

“We’re creating community within our athletic department,” Howard said. “We’re trying to establish a legacy of training, and part of that is developing relationships.”

The teams competed in a variety of activities: pushups, situps, rope jumping, an obstacle race, tug-of-war and dodgeball.

“There’s a need for a competitive edge among our athletes,” Howard said.

Howard said last year’s training theme, “Side by Side,” has been replaced for 2011-12 by “FOCUS,” an acronym for Faith, Obedience, Commitment, Unity and Spirit. The biblical basis for the theme is Hebrews 12:1: “Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”

T-shirts with the new theme and verse emblazoned on the back were distributed to the athletes at the close of the competition.
