About 60 GCU faculty and staff got a sneak peek of the College of Arts and Sciences building on Wednesday.
Charlie Sirokman, project director for campus development, led a tour of the four-story building, which is about 50 percent complete.
Each floor has an open-air breezeway with elevators that will separate offices on the east end of the floor and classrooms and labs on the west end.
The first floor – which already is painted and has sheetrock in place -- will include a chapel, offices for Spiritual Life and Christian Studies, a staff lounge and classrooms.
The most distinctive feature is an open-air cross within the brickwork on the southeastern corner of the chapel. “We call it the cornerstone of campus off the Promenade,” Sirokman said.
A cross pattern also will be visible in the carpeting and ceiling clouds of the chapel, and a corner section of the wall will be made of glass and lead to a multipurpose garden-type gathering area where the cornerstone cross is located.
The second floor will have offices for Arts and Sciences and classrooms.
The third floor features more Arts and Sciences classrooms, nursing skill labs, simulation labs and classrooms.
And the fourth floor will have a state-of-the-art DNA lab, forensic lab, organic chemistry lab, other general chemistry labs and three classrooms.
Classrooms will have the ability to expand from 30 to 60 seats with an operable middle wall, and each floor also will have private study spaces available.
