Slam & Jam Concert Series to Bring Together Hoops, Harmonies

Christian recording artist Lincoln Brewster will perform a Christmas concert Friday night following the Grand Canyon University men’s basketball game against San Diego Christian College to kick off the University’s Slam & Jam concert series.

Slam & Jam features four Christian concert performances at GCU Arena during the Antelopes’ inaugural NCAA Division I season that are free to anyone with a ticket to that night’s basketball game. Basketball tickets are just $5, and family four-packs, which include soda and popcorn, are only $15.

Brewster has released eight albums, including a “Joy to the World” Christmas collection that will be prominent in Friday’s postgame concert.

Other Slam & Jam concerts that will follow GCU basketball games are:

Jan. 4 vs. New Mexico State University: Jon Foreman, lead singer and guitarist of the San Diego-based rock band Switchfoot. Foreman is known for his songwriting that reflects faith, hope and love.

Feb. 6 vs. Utah Valley University: MercyMe, a rock and worship band with 13 albums and 13 consecutive singles that have reached the top five on the Billboard Christian Songs chart.

Feb. 27 vs. the University of Missouri at Kansas City: Jeremy Camp, nominated six times for the Christian Male Vocalist of the Year, winning twice, and with 24 No. 1 radio hits, a Grammy nomination and five Dove Awards.

Both of GCU’s home games thus far in the 2013-14 season have been sellouts. Stadium Journey, a website that reviews stadium experiences, recently raved about basketball games at GCU Arena, stating: “GCU is definitely doing it the right way. Out of the four different Arizona (Division I) schools, GCU is easily the most fan-friendly.”

For Friday’s 6 p.m. game against San Diego Christian and a game Dec. 3 vs. Vanguard University, fans can get a free ticket by donating a new toy to the University’s Canyon Cares Christmas drive at the Arena box office. GCU has set a goal of collecting 5,000 toys for its Canyon Cares Christmas celebration on Dec. 8 to benefit surrounding Phoenix neighborhoods.

Bible Verse

All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth. (Hebrews 11:13)
