Respiratory Care Student Honored as Practitioner of the Year

The Colorado Society for Respiratory Care honored Derrick Davis as its Practitioner of the Year. This statewide award recognizes one practitioner each year to recognize outstanding contributions to the advancement of respiratory care.

Society President Kari Woodruff recognized Davis in her opening remarks at the state meeting, where he addressed his colleagues.

“I felt so incredibly blessed, humbled and honored to receive this award,” says Davis. “This award has gone to some amazing respiratory care practitioners and the thought of being a part of that group motivates me to continue to learn, grow and practice the art and science of respiratory medicine.”

Davis graduated from Pima Medical Institute, Denver, Colo., as a Respiratory Therapist in the Summer of 2008 and enrolled at GCU in Fall 2008 to complete the Bachelors in Respiratory Care program. He intends to continue into medical school.  He currently practices with the Swedish Medical center in Denver.

“I truly believe getting my BSRC through Grand Canyon University is a vital part in my growth as a respiratory practitioner,” he says. “My plans for the future continue in clinical medicine. I am continuing to seek God's guidance in pursuing medical school.”

According to Davis, attending GCU online full-time and working full-time is challenging. He believes that by setting obtainable small goals every day, for both school and clinical medicine, the end goal of gaining knowledge that can greatly impact the care of patients is achievable.

“The motivation for doing well in studies at Grand Canyon and in the practice of respiratory care come from a desire to be a health care provider that shows radical loving care,” he says. “This desire has been, and continues to be fueled by teachers, co-workers, and most importantly my faith.”
