GCU hosted its annual Health Sciences & Nursing Day on November 6, attracting more than 1,400 Valley high school students to our campus. The event, which GCU has hosted for more than 20 years, is known as one of the University's most successful activities.
Health Sciences & Nursing Day features healthcare-related presentations, interactive activities and demonstrations aimed at providing future college students with timely information about career options in nursing and allied health fields. The event also offers students some first-hand experiences through a variety of activities, including a tour of the always-popular cadaver lab. Another well-attended presentation was “Body of Evidence: Life of a Medical Examiner” presented by Medical Examiner John X. Hu from the Maricopa County Office of Medical Examiner.
Acupuncture: An Ancient Remedy for our Modern World, presented by Dr. Patricia Johnson, GCU adjunct faculty member – was standing room only in Howerton Hall. The Sports Medicine Team, presented by Dr. Craig Phelps, Provost at A.T. Still University & Phoenix Suns Team Physician – Dr. Phelps is always a popular presenter on our campus. Nurses – Superheroes of the Healthcare Profession!, presented by Lori Gutierrez, RN-C, President & Owner of Clinical Advisors for Resources & Educational Services (CARES) – some of her own superhero nurses mentioned in her presentation included our own Dr. Fran Roberts and Dr. Kathy Player.
GCU faculty, as well as Arizona health professionals, presented topics such as radiology, optometry, surgery, counseling, and several areas of specialization within nursing. Students even had the opportunity to get "hands-on" experience in the Nursing Skills Practice Lab by using the life-like simulations used to train nursing students (and a few willing faculty and staff members).
