Dr. Melanie D. Logue, dean of the GCU College of Nursing and Health Care Professions (CONHCP), has been appointed by Gov. Doug Ducey to a five-year term on the Arizona State Board of Nursing.
Logue said she was delighted about the appointment, which meshes with her commitment to share her time and talents in service to protect the public.
“At the same time, I am certain this experience will continue to grow me as a nursing leader and cultivate new skill sets that will be relevant to my University role as I network with peers, professionals and community thought leaders,” she said.
The Arizona State Board of Nursing is responsible for licensure, certification and regulation of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and certified nursing assistants. Its members oversee statewide training programs for nurses and nurse assistants and manage a nondisciplinary, confidential monitoring program for chemically dependent nurses. The board also handles complaints, investigations, disciplinary matters and enforcement of nursing regulations.
The board has operated as the oversight agency for Arizona's nursing population for more than 90 years. It was established in 1921 when the state passed the Nurse Practice Act, which formally recognized professional nursing.
Members meet six times a year to review complaints and determine whether there have been violations of the act. They also review potential statute or rule revisions related to nursing practice and regulation, approve advisory opinions and determine compliance with nursing education program standards
Logue, a GCU alumna who was named the CONHCP’s dean this spring, has been in the nursing profession for about 25 years. A single mother of two teenagers, she started out as a pediatric nurse at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, was a trauma nurse at Good Samaritan Hospital and for years was a nurse practitioner.
In addition to a BSN from GCU, Logue has a master’s of science with a concentration in family nurse practitioner from Arizona State University’s College of Nursing & Health Innovation and a Ph.D. in nursing and doctor of nursing practice from the University of Arizona’s College of Nursing.
She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the UA, then returned to her first alma mater in 2014 to run GCU’s new doctor of nursing practice program at the behest of then-Dean Dr. Anne McNamara. Shortly after, Logue was named the college’s interim associate dean of graduate studies/assistant dean of graduate studies. When McNamara resigned as GCU’s nursing dean in October, Logue was appointed interim chief nurse administrator and then dean in April.
