Launch of MercyMe's 2015 tour at GCU prompts marriage proposal

Photos by Darryl Webb

GCU senior Makayla Phelps attended the Lopes basketball game on Sunday afternoon with her boyfriend, Nathaniel Brown, not suspecting what would happen a couple hours later during the MercyMe concert on the Quad. The senior business management major, who has been dating Brown for about five months, thought something was a little odd in that her dad, Kevin, had brought a camera to the game, which he never does, and that her mom, Julie, took Phelps purse and other items from her arms when Brown asked her to approach the stage with him. Once there, Brown, a 2014 GCU alumnus, got down on one knee and asked Phelps to marry him as MercyMe played its lovely song, "Beautiful." Phelps was presented with a MercyMe You're Beautiful T-shirt and a copy of the band's CD on which the song is recorded, along with her great-grandmother's engagement ring. A class act on Brown's part, and Phelps said ... yes.
