Many things surprised economist Jim Rounds about GCU when he was putting together his economic impact study: how many nursing graduates the university produces, the hyped-up basketball games, and the sheer number of residence halls. But what left the biggest impression was GCU’s impact on the community and that GCU knows that to build an economy, you must first build community.

The subject is the cover story of the August issue of GCU Magazine, which arrives today – you’ll find them available in the purple bins on campus and digitally at the GCU News website.
Other stories spotlight alumnus Levi Conlow, who runs a multimillion dollar e-bike company but has found a new purpose in philanthropy; a one-of-a-kind hackable, gamified network called HACKnet that students will use to sharpen their cyber skills; and how GCU is using the metaverse to interact with students.
Also look for stories on GCU’s 1974-75 basketball team, which brought home a national championship; how university counselors connect with students and get them to graduation; and alumna Keeli Rodriguez, who helped bring Universal’s Epic Universe to life.
Some places to find the magazine: the Student Union, Thunderground, the Student Life Building, Lope Shop, Global Credit Union Arena, Colangelo College of Business, and the 27th Avenue and Camelback Road complex (buildings 71 and 66). The digital version is here.
