GCU health students excel in state competition

GCU students in HOSA-Future Health Professionals competed recently at the organization’s state leadership conference in Tucson.

They earned six first-place awards: Lydia English in the behavioral health competition; Hannah Woodruff, medical reading; Henry Geronimo, nutrition; Casandra Musil, physical therapy, Emily Reilly, sports medicine; and Scarlett Armienta and partner in CPR/first aid.

Also placing were: Minthu Aung, who took home second in medical reading; Brenna Dykstra, second place in medical terminology; and Joshue Vega and Naomi Estime, second in CPR/first aid. Earning third-place awards were Sophia Edwards in the medical technology competition and Daniel Almada in sports medicine.

The first-, second- and third-place finishers advanced to compete at HOSA’s International Leadership Conference June 21-24 in Dallas.

Also, Hannah Woodruff was chosen as president of Arizona HOSA.

HOSA (it once stood for Health Occupations Students of America) is a global student-led organization whose mission is to empower its members to become leaders in the global health community through education, collaboration and experience.

GCU’s chapter of HOSA is advised by College of Science, Engineering and Technology Professor Dr. Mark Wireman and Marni Landy, K12 Outreach Director of K12 Educational Development.
