Teachers learn to speak out during Teach Up Week

GCU News Bureau

Advocating for yourself as an educator was the topic of “Teacher Advocacy and Self-Care,” a Provost Speaker Series discussion on Monday at Grand Canyon University.

A panel of (left to right) Howard Paley, Dr. Lupita Hightower, Wendy Ceja-Sanchez, Dr. Crystal McCabe and Anthony Perez addressed College of Education students to begin Lopes Teach Up Week.

To do so, experts suggest: know yourself, know what you need and know how you can obtain it.

The speaker series kicked off the College of Education's Lopes Teach Up Week, which runs through Wednesday, and is focused on helping students secure teaching positions and advocate for teaching and education professions.

Dr. Crystal McCabe, Dr. Lupita Hightower, Anthony Perez, Howard Paley and Wendy Ceja-Sanchez  addressed the group in a panel discussion Monday in the Theology Building.

Paley said reflecting on your teaching practices by keeping a journal is helpful, as is physical exercise. Perez reminded the audience that they are not "just teachers" but are experts at determining what is best for their students. McCabe added that she always tries to determine the course of action that is best for the student when advocating for them on an issue.

Ceja-Sanchez said it's important to be organized, which allows one to set aside time for family, and Hightower emphasized that a strong support system is helpful.

Other events this week include:

  • 3:30-5 p.m. Tuesday, mock interviews at the Colangelo College of Business, Rooms 225 and 226. (Interested students should book a spot with Career Connections or through the Student Portal.)
  • 3-5 p.m. Wednesday, Lopes Leap to Teach career and networking expos on the Promenade.

Bible Verse

Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. (Romans 12:4-5)
