No Arena, no worries. God shall provide a hub for weekly summer worship at Grand Canyon University.
Summer Chapel begins Monday with Dean of Students Pastor Tim Griffin offering a spiritual message at Tell Science Building in the converted “old computer lab” classroom at 28-100. Chapel will be held there at 11:15 a.m. most Mondays through July 28.
Last year, summer Chapel was held for the first time at GCU, in Ethington Theatre. A stage resurfacing project has made the theatre unavailable this summer.
Danielle Rinnier, GCU’s director of Spiritual Life, said the University decided to host Chapel at the Tell building because its high ceilings and central location north of the Quad make it more accessible to the 100 to 200 people expected each Monday. Unlike school-year Chapel sessions that are packed with students, summer Chapel provides a more intimate setting for employees.
“From the staff perspective, I think there was a feeling of GCU being dedicated to your spiritual health and spiritual formation,” Rinnier said. “I know they hear that a lot, but it was good for them to see that … to see that Chapel’s not entirely based on students.”
Rinnier said she hoped employees can take an hour each week to unplug from work, connect with God and share in prayer with their fellow staffers.
