Grand Canyon University undergraduate research was well represented at the 63rd annual Meeting of the Arizona and Southern Nevada Branch of the American Society for Microbiology on April 13 in Las Vegas.
GCU student Jessica Doan won the oral presentation award in the undergraduate research category at the event, which featured 60 poster and 28 oral presentations given by undergraduate and graduate students, as well as junior faculty.
The society’s meeting committee selected four GCU research abstracts for oral presentations. The following GCU students gave these talks:
From the Microbial Biotechnology Division, mentored by Dr. Galyna Kufryk:
- Emily Garcia, who spoke on “Morphology of Anabaena variabilis upon Molybdenum Supplementation.”
- Peyton Smith, who presented “The Physiological Study of Anabaena variabilis Supplemented with Molybdenum.”
- Jessica Doan, who spoke on “Genetic Deletion of Uptake Hydrogenase in Filamentous Anabaena for Optimized Hydrogen Production.”
From the Antimicrobial Discovery Lab, mentored by Dr. Karen Denzler:
- Isabella Gilbreth presented “Antimicrobial Properties in the Libidibia Paraguariensis, Libidibia Pulch and Libidibia Cacaloco.”
The Antimicrobial Discovery Lab and Microbial Biotechnology Division were also well represented in the poster session.
GCU professor of biology Dr. Galyna Kufryk said, "It was nice to see how our students presented their research on various topics of microbiology at this meeting. Their energy, their passion for science and discovery were evident, and they were eager to share their ideas as well as to learn from others in the scientific community.”
