Student leaders at Grand Canyon University described "a community of love and grace and compassion" while meeting with the media Friday afternoon to share their feelings on the cultural diversity on campus. The event occurred in light of an inappropriate comment from one of GCU's professors in September of 2016 and subsequent derogatory comments toward the University from Black Lives Matter representatives.
Dr. Antoinette Farmer-Thompson, the dean of GCU's Honors College and chairperson of the Diversity Council, spoke about the University's many efforts regarding social justice issues and was joined by leaders of the Associated Students of GCU and the Black Student Union.
GCU condemned the professor's comments in this statement and the panel of students cited the University’s numerous efforts to help people of color in its community and promote respectful dialogue regarding social justice issues on its campus.
