Grand Canyon University has installed its first permanent Electric Vehicle Service Equipment (EVSE) charging stations in parking lot 100A, off Colter Street.
The two 70-amp units are level-two chargers for a faster charging time. More 40-amp units are expected to be added at other campus parking garage locations by January.
It’s part of campuswide efforts toward energy efficiency and sustainability, said Joseph Costa, Utilities Resource Specialist at GCU.
“We see the growth of electric cars and it’s only going to grow more in that direction, so it’s something we want to get a handle on,” he said.
Employees have inquired about the possibility of EV charging stations, and Costa made a scan of parking garages and saw enough electric vehicles in the lots to install them.
The stations are now available to the GCU community for free, until rates and details on use times are finalized. Install the ampUp application on your phone, and a QR code on the station will link to app.
