The Canyon Corridor Project, Grand Canyon University’s partnership with Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona, has been named a Merit Finalist award recipient in the 2016 Mutual of America Community Partnership Award competition.
The project, which began last year, seeks to renovate 700 homes in the Canyon Corridor with new windows, painting, landscaping and roofing. GCU subsidizes most of the cost of the projects, and its students, faculty and staff work alongside Habitat volunteers to complete the tasks.
“Since January 2015, we’ve been able to serve nearly 80 families in Phase 1 of the project,” said Jason Barlow, president and CEO of Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona. “The Canyon Corridor Project is a powerful national model for university-community partnerships.
“Block by block, we’re restoring homes, revitalizing neighborhoods and giving West Valley residents a new sense of community pride and optimism.”
The Mutual of America Community Partnership Award annually honors the outstanding contributions that nonprofit organizations, in partnership with public, private and other social sector organizations, make to society. Since 1996, the Community Partnership Award has recognized 210 partnerships from cities and towns across America.
