Grand Canyon University film students Andrew Stokich, Cody Carlson and Andrew Peterson had never worked with 3D prior to creating “Nameless.”

You couldn’t tell. The trio brought home a second-place award last Saturday at the Campus MovieFest in Hollywood, Calif., in the category of 3D Short Films.

The MovieFest, which bills itself as the world’s largest student film festival, attracted entries from 200 schools and 700,000 students.

The GCU students teamed with Ray Banna of Arizona State University to create a film treatment  (or outline) of the movie to send to the CMF contest. They were one of 25 entries that were chosen to participate. From there, the students were sent a 3D camera and editing laptop and given one week to shoot the film.

The plot of “Nameless” centers on a homeless man and the way he is treated when he encounters a well-to-do couple. The film, complete with 3D effects, poses the question: "Have you shown compassion to someone nameless in your eyes?" Click here to see the film (viewable in 3D or standard video).

Banna served as the writer and director of the five-minute film; Stokich was the producer and assistant director; Carlson the director of photography; and Peterson the director of sound design.

The students were given red-carpet treatment during the awards, which are handed out in the categories of Best Picture, Best Comedy, Best Drama, the Elfenworks Social Justice Award, 3D Short Films, and other Golden Tripod Awards. As part of the second-place award, the GCU crew and Banna won a $1,500 cash prize plus film editing software.

“I didn’t really think we had a chance, to be honest,” Carlson said. “I thought we would be vacationing in Hollywood and it was just going to be fun. When they said we got second place… that was a pleasant surprise.”
