GCU, Chicanos por la Causa host inaugural Students Inspiring Students Golf Classic

GCU Golf Course is the site of the Students Inspiring Students Golf Classic on Thursday, Nov. 18.

PHOENIX (Nov. 17, 2021) – Grand Canyon University, in partnership with Chicanos por la Causa, will host the inaugural Students Inspiring Students Golf Classic at the Grand Canyon University Championship Golf Course on Thursday, November 18. Presented by Pacific Office Automation, the Golf Classic is expected to raise more than $300,000 for GCU’s Students Inspiring Students (SIS) scholarship fund.

The SIS scholarship fund is a public-private partnership in which a community-minded university, local businesses and donors, K-12 schools and a pay-it-forward scholarship program are greatly impacting education in GCU’s diverse inner-city community. Each year, the University awards full-tuition scholarships to high-achieving students from inner-city high schools who maintain a minimum 3.5 grade point average, demonstrate financial need and complete 100 or more hours of required tasks such as college-preparedness exercises and academic assistance in GCU’s innovative Learning Lounge. The Learning Lounge provides free one-on-one tutoring from GCU’s best and brightest students to any K-12 student who seeks assistance.

“We’re so excited to broaden the ways we raise support for the Students Inspiring Students scholarship program,” said GCU’s Vice President of Advancement, Dr. Kale Gober. “This inaugural event will result in more than $300,000 worth of impact, and we’re extremely grateful to the businesses who have stepped up to support such a great cause.”

Since the scholarship fund was created in 2016, GCU has awarded 545 full-tuition scholarships to low-income students who otherwise may not have been able to afford college. In turn, the scholarship recipients pay it forward by volunteering in the surrounding community and on campus, including in the Learning Lounge. The end result is a grass-roots, self-funded initiative that is both sustainable and scalable in which students are inspiring students and making a significant impact on K-12 education in an inner-city environment. So far, 103 SIS recipients have graduated from GCU and received jobs at companies like Banner University Downtown, American Express and General Motors.
