A Grand Canyon University contingent will take part in Phoenix Food Day, which starts at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Cartwright Community Garden, 4208 N. 51st Ave., Phoenix.

  • Canyon 49 Grill Sous Chef Michael Willison will helm a cooking demonstration with an original recipe, called tacos de calabacitas, starting at 11 a.m. Willison's passion for food and the culinary arts began at age 7, when he began cooking with his grandmother and learning family recipes.  At 13, he helped cook at a friend's family-owned restaurant and knew he wanted to learn and grow more in the food industry. Willison earned a degree in culinary arts from The Art Institute of Phoenix and was hired at the Four Seasons Resort and Hotel, where he worked for more than 13 years. He also earned a bachelor's degree in business from the University of Phoenix.
  • Learning advocates (LEADs) will be onsite to introduce families and children to academic services offered at the GCU Learning Lounge at the Milwaukee Brewers.
  • GCU Baseball will be holding down the Healthy Kids Zone alongside the Milwaukee Brewers, who will host a mini baseball clinic.
  • Thunder and friends will bring the party and help pass out the apples to guests for the Ceremonial Apple Crunch, scheduled for noon with Mayor Kate Gallego and other dignitaries.
