Farris discusses government's cybersecurity steps

GCU News Bureau

Dr. Dwight Farris, who teaches information technology and cybersecurity in the College of Science, Engineering and Technology at Grand Canyon University, spoke recently to KJZZ National Public Radio field correspondent Matthew Casey about the Department of Homeland Security’s steps to elevate cybersecurity across the government.

Dr. Dwight Farris

Farris talked about how the government is becoming more proactive when it comes to cybersecurity – something needed to prevent a catastrophe.

“The number of breaches, the number of compromises are on the rise, and we need to do something to combat that,” said Farris.

It was in late February when Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas announced the early steps DHS is taking to bring about President Joe Biden’s vision to improve cybersecurity at all levels of government: by leading efforts to mitigate risks to the United States, by strengthening its partnerships with the private sector and by expanding its investment in the infrastructure and people required to defend against malicious cyberattacks.

Increasing the level of cybersecurity in the government, Farris told KJZZ, bodes well in drawing more students to the field – a growth industry that’s a focus for GCU.

The University’s bachelor’s degree program in Computer Science received a prestigious ABET accreditation in the fall. Also, the IT with an Emphasis in Cybersecurity Bachelor’s Degree program was awarded the National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education designation from the National Security Agency and DHS in 2019.
