Grand Canyon University athletes got to compete against each other — and have a little fun — Thursday in the Fall Fitness Challenge. "It's all about teams getting to be with each other and supporting each other," said Chuck Howard, GCU's director of performance athletics. "My thing is to make a community out of it. We're all in this together." The athletes competed in a variety of events, everything from pushing sleds and flipping truck tires to running obstacle courses and doing pull-ups, and then had an after-party at the pool at which Jerome Garrison (basketball) and Madeline McArthur (soccer) sang, several other current and former athletes gave testimonies, 100 Bibles were handed out and 30 athletes decided to give their lives to Jesus Christ. The winner in the men's competition was a group that combined athletes from the golf and tennis teams, and the same combination won on the women's side. (Who said golfers and tennis players aren't athletes?) But the 250 athletes who participated all were winners in one way or another. "We want to do it around finals because they're stressed and this is good stress relief," Howard said.
